Character NAME: Kili

Canon & MEDIUM: The Hobbit, Peter Jackson Films (mostly)

Canon PULL-POINT: Just after he’s seen Thorin carried off by the Eagles; almost end of the first film

Character AGE: 77; in human years closer to late teens, early twenties

Character ABILITIES: Kili is a dwarf, and as such he has higher resistance to extreme weather changes. Dwarves are also more resistant to evil; their corruption is more in the sense of greed rather than actual evil. As a member of the royal Durin line, Kili is trained in all the basics of dwarven culture. He can work a forge, not just properly, but well, and is particularly good at combat. His main talent lies in his bow, though he has skill with his sword and throwing knives as well. Kili has a knack for playing the fiddle, though his own instrument is not coming with him to Exsilium.

Character HISTORY: Summary of the first Hobbit Film.

Kili was born in Ered Luin after the sacking of Erebor in the year TA 2864, late Third Age. He grew up fairly sheltered, though as an heir of the royal line of Durin, he was well educated. His behavior indicates that the lessons he was taught didn’t stick very well, however. As the youngest, it’s likely he did not believe there would be a need for him to have the knowledge that a king ought to have, and he was allowed to get away with more things than his older brother, Fili.
When he was 77, he accompanied the company of Thorin Oakenshield on the quest to Erebor. Sticking close to his elder brother Fili’s side, Kili was the youngest dwarf on the quest (though movie canon says Ori is the youngest, I go with book canon on this one). They throw a raucous party in Bag End without Bilbo’s permission, during which Kili appears to get rather drunk, teasing and poking fun at their unwilling host. The next morning, when Bilbo decides to join them, Kili and his brother Fili are the ones to grab Bilbo and hoist him onto a pony.

As the two younger dwarves, Fili and Kili are often assigned the more menial chores, such as watching the ponies while in the Trollshaw Forest, at which point they somehow don’t notice two of the ponies being carried off by mountain trolls. Unwilling to let Thorin know of their mistake, Kili suggests that Bilbo, as the burglar, investigate. This of course only ends with the poor hobbit getting caught, and as later mentioned, Kili is the one that brandishes his sword at the three massive mountain trolls, demanding they let Bilbo go. Battle ensues, and the dwarves are captured and nearly eaten, saved only by Bilbo’s quick thinking and the sun, which turns the trolls to stone.

After a quick stop at the trollcave and an encounter with the peculiar wizard Radagast the Brown, the company is set upon by a pack of wargs and orcs who have been hunting their scent. In their flight to safety, Gandalf leads them to Rivendell, despite the dwarves’ long-standing dislike of elves. Once in Rivendell, the dwarves initially mistake the arrival of Lord Elrond as an attack and immediately form a tight circle, pulling Bilbo into the center.

Later they’re invited to dinner, which consists of salad and greens. The dwarves don’t take kindly to this, and while Thorin is away speaking with Lord Elrond, they destroy furniture in order to start a fire and roast sausages.

They leave before dawn in order to avoid the elves and make their way into the Misty Mountains, where they end up in the middle of a fight between three Stone Giants. The company is split up when it becomes apparent that the trail is actually one giant’s knees. Kili is separated from his brother at this point, looking more terrified than he does at any other part in the film. Though he reaches for Fili’s hand, the distance is too great. They’re reunited after a scare in which it seems that half the company has been crushed to death, and they spend the night in a seemingly abandoned cave, the brothers sleeping close to each other.

It turns out that they were actually sleeping on a secret entrance to “Goblin Town”, an underground town inhabited by, you guessed it, goblins. The company is threatened with torture and death, until Gandalf appears at the last second to usher them into an escape. Kili is very nearly impaled by arrows, which he blocks first with his sword and then with a ladder. They’re doing well, until the Great Goblin appears in their path, blocking them off. Gandalf kills the goblin and the bridge that they are on starts to fall. After a wild ride, it finally stops, the dwarves very nearly crushed by the bridge, their comrades, and then the corpse of the Great Goblin.

They miraculously make an escape, only to learn that Bilbo is missing. Both Kili and his brother look around frantically at this realization, hoping to find him. Thorin goes on a spiel about how Bilbo was never meant for the quest when the hobbit reappears. The relief is very nearly palpable, at least until they realize they’re being ambushed by the same orc hunting party as before. They take cover in the trees, at which point the wargs knock them down until there is only one tree left standing. Azog the Defiler, Thorin’s old enemy, appears. In order to buy them more time, Thorin faces down the enormous orc by himself and is seriously injured. Bilbo saves him just in time, followed quickly by Kili, Fili, and Dwalin, Thorin’s close friend and cousin. They are rescued by the Eagles, who carry the dwarves off with them to their carrock. Thorin is, to all appearances, dead, and though his young nephews call for him, he does not respond.

It’s right at this point that Kili is joining the game, battle-weary and harangued with worry for his uncle.

Character PERSONALITY:
Kili is a young dwarf with a knack for trouble. At the age of 77, he still hasn’t quite come of age for a dwarf. He’s in what would probably be considered his late teens in human years, though he’s still considered a kid by dwarf standards. As such, he’s eager to prove himself and show that he is a true warrior and worthy to be called an heir of Durin. Kili struggles to show that he’s an adult, but his mentality is still that of a kid’s. He’s excitable and rash, and extremely reckless at times. What he sees as a chance to prove himself is most often more likely to get someone hurt. In Bag End, he and his older brother take obvious pleasure in tossing around their host’s treasured dishware and are amused with how terrified Bilbo is about all of it. Kili shows little regard for what the hobbit is feeling, instead focused on his own entertainment. Kili repeats this behavior several times just in the movie, when he encourages Bilbo to take on the trolls on his own, and when he tells tales of orc attacks.

But that isn’t to say Kili doesn’t care about others. He’s a very loving individual with a fierce loyalty to his family and friends. Dwarves have a very strong sense of family ties, and Kili is no different. He’s constantly at his brother’s side, and when his uncle Thorin is about, Kili sticks close to him as well. To Kili, the Company is family, and he has a particular fondness for their hobbit burglar. When Bilbo is captured by the trolls, it’s Kili that boldly orders them to let him go. Later on, after the Misty Mountains, Kili’s face is one of the most worried when they realize the hobbit is missing, and he’s one of the most relieved to see him back and safe. He loves his family and the Company, and will stay loyal to them until the end. While his strongest loyalties would be to his brother and uncle, he is true to those who have earned his respect.

As an heir of the Durin line, Kili has been well-educated beside his brother, Fili. He has a well-rounded knowledge of just about everything dwarf and has a basic understanding of geography. Unfortunately, he uses his heart more than his head when it comes to decision making. Kili is very instinctual; he understands strategy but it isn’t how he thinks. He acts rashly and oftentimes lands himself in trouble for it. Again, in the incident with the mountain trolls, Kili challenges them by himself. One dwarf against three large mountain trolls are not the best odds, and yet he does it anyway.

Kili is also a bit of an outlier. At 77, he still doesn’t have a beard or even a mustache like Fili’s to brag about. He’s skinny for a dwarf, and he’s picked up the unusual weapon of a bow. Most dwarves wield axes or war hammers, and while Kili has a well-rounded knowledge of weaponry and is exceptional with the sword, his real talent is in the bow. Understandably, these unique characteristics have separated him from other dwarves. The reason he exhibits such reckless and outlandish behavior is in an effort to get others to notice and respect him. He wants to be considered a good dwarf just as much as anyone else, and with no beard to prove it, Kili has to compensate in other ways. Another reason he tries to stand out is because Kili is one half of a pair. He and Fili are inseparable. Their names are rarely ever spoken separately, instead as a joint word. Even for brothers they are particularly close. Kili wants to stand out and be seen as an individual, though at the same time, he’s unwilling to fully separate from his brother.

» EXSILIUM INFORMATION

Chosen WEAPON: With mod approval, Kili’s chosen weapon will be his bow and his arrows. I’d like his bow to evolve to give him a greater range, and it would be super cool if his arrows were “magicked” depending on what he needed. Say, for example, fire arrows, or grappling hook arrows. I don’t know why he’d use grappling hook arrows, but I don’t want to be definitively saying what he will and will not have as far as his arrows go. I want to give him better accuracy as well. I’m hoping that after a little while in game, I’ll be able to say for sure what I want Kili to have as far as arrows go.

Character INVENTORY: Kili will be bringing his bow and arrows, quiver included. He’ll be bringing a few of his knives, which he keeps strapped to his belt normally. His sword will be coming, which is also kept in its sheath at his hip. Aside from his weapons, Kili will be bringing his aderpable face, his pipe, and a full pouch of Longbottom Leaf.

First PERSON:

[The face that appears on the screen is dirty and tired, tight with anxiety and just a hint of fear in big brown eyes. A slightly bloodied hand rubs at his cheek, and the young dwarf clears his throat.]

Um…hello? The tall woman said I could talk to other people on this…thing. I guess I just talk and…then what?

[Oh, oh well. Kili’s completely out of his league here. He’s confused and tired and he just wants to go home, but he knows better than to ask for that.]

If…if anyone knows where Thorin or Fili are… [His voice dies in his throat, tight with worry. He doesn’t even know if Thorin’s still alive.

But there’s something else that’s troubling him that’s easier to talk about than his own kin.]

Why did she thank me? I’m not here because I want to be.
